Katherine Macdonald is a Sydenham-based Artist, Designer, and Mentor.

As a Fashion Designer, her professional work involves designing clothes for the human body, and life drawing forms part of her methodology for studying the body in its varying forms.
It is a reminder that there is no such thing as an ‘ideal body’ and all bodies have their own unique character based on experiences of life. This is what makes designing for them endlessly rewarding.

‘In Real Life’ is a series of gestural life drawings observing different models in self-curated poses.
She describes them as ‘warm up’ sketches, which she typically creates before moving on to longer, more detailed works.

The limitation of time brings energy and life to Katherine’s work. The process is like feeling with the eyes, to get an impression of not only the physical body, but also the personality and character inside. How are they feeling; how has life shaped them? It also forces the artist to focus on the space the body inhabits, leaving no time to agonise over the finer details.
